NCAA Conferences Explained: SEC, Big Ten, ACC, Big 12 and Where Your Team Fits

A conference is the group of schools a team plays against every season — and it decides almost everything else: who your rival is, what channel the game is on, and which Saturday in November actually matters. There are 12 of them that matter for buying a jersey. Here is what each one is, and how deep our stock runs in every single one.

The short version

  • 67 schools play in the four power conferences (SEC, Big Ten, ACC, Big 12) — and 2,811 of our jerseys belong to them.
  • We stock 141 of the 148 conference schools — every SEC, Big Ten and Big 12 school, 16 of 17 in the ACC.
  • Notre Dame is the outlier. It has no conference for football, which is exactly why it has its own shrine of a fanbase.
  • Big East is a basketball conference. Eleven schools, no football, and 217 jerseys for Georgetown, UConn, Villanova and the rest.
  • Another 279 schools sit outside these leagues — FCS programmes, mid-major basketball powers, historically Black colleges — with 1,026 jerseys between them.

01What a conference actually is

A conference is a membership club. Schools join it, play each other on a fixed schedule, split the television money, and send their champion to the postseason. It is not a league hierarchy like European football — there is no promotion and relegation. A school in the Sun Belt is not "lower division" than one in the SEC in any formal sense; it is simply in a different club with a smaller TV deal.

That distinction matters when you buy a jersey, because fanbase size follows television exposure, not team quality. Boise State has beaten plenty of SEC teams in bowl games. It does not have SEC-sized merchandise demand, because it is not on SEC-sized television every Saturday.

Practically, for a jersey buyer, the conference tells you three things:

  • How many rivals your team has. Eight conference games a season means eight opponents whose fans you will see in the stands and in the group chat.
  • How easy the jersey is to find. We carry 51 different jerseys for the median SEC school and 3 for the median CUSA school — that gap is almost entirely demand, not loyalty.
  • Whether the colourway is stable. Conference realignment means some schools have changed uniform partners recently. If you are matching a jersey someone already owns, check the label, not the school.

02Why your team keeps switching conferences

Conferences change because television contracts do. When a league's TV deal comes up for renewal, its members look at what the richer leagues are earning per school, and some of them leave. The four power conferences earn several times what the Group of Five earns, which is why the traffic has been one-directional for thirty years.

The 2020s reshuffle is the one that will confuse jersey buyers most:

SchoolUsed to beNowWhat it changed
Texas & OklahomaBig 12SECThe SEC went from 14 to 16 schools
USC & UCLAPac-12Big TenThe Big Ten went coast to coast, 14 → 18

Oregon State & Washington StatePac-12Pac-12 (rebuilt)Kept the name and added six new members
SMU, Cal, StanfordAmerican / Pac-12ACCThe ACC went from 14 to 17
If you are buying for someone over 40: their team may be in a different conference than they remember. Ask which school, not which league — the school is what is printed on the jersey, and the conference never appears on the garment at all.

03The SEC: 16 schools, all 16 in stock

1,047 jerseys across 16 schools, and we carry every one of them — the only conference where our coverage is 16 for 16. The median SEC school has 51 different jerseys in our catalogue, roughly seven times the median CUSA school.

The deep end: Tennessee Volunteers, LSU Tigers, Florida Gators. Tennessee alone has 161.

Where the stock sits: the four power conferences hold 2,811 of the 3,879 conference jerseys on the site.

What makes the SEC different from a jersey buyer's point of view is that it is a football-first league with no off-season. Spring practice is covered, the draft is covered, recruiting is covered. A Tennessee jersey gets worn in February, not just in November.

04The Big Ten: 18 schools after the West Coast move

839 jerseys, 18 schools, all in stock. The Big Ten is now genuinely transcontinental — Oregon Ducks, Washington Huskies, USC Trojans and UCLA Bruins joined the Midwestern core in 2024, and the league went from 14 schools to 18.

The surprise in our numbers: the deepest Big Ten stock is not Ohio State or Michigan. It is Oregon Ducks (108), followed by Minnesota and Penn State. Oregon's fans buy early and buy often.

Big Ten schools also skew cold-weather, which changes what sells: this is the conference where a long-sleeve or a hoodie under the jersey is a real consideration rather than a stylistic one. If you are sizing for a Big Ten fan, the 2-inch layering rule in our size guide matters more than usual.

05The ACC: 17 schools, coast to coast

487 jerseys across 17 schools, with 16 in stock. The ACC absorbed Cal and Stanford from the collapsed Pac-12 and SMU from the American, which is why a "Atlantic Coast" conference now has two California schools in it.

Deepest: Miami Hurricanes, Cal Bears, Florida State Seminoles, Clemson Tigers. The ACC is the most basketball-and-football balanced of the four power leagues, which shows up in what people buy — Duke and North Carolina jerseys move on basketball season, not football season, and they move hard in March.

06The Big 12: the league that lost Texas and kept going

438 jerseys, 16 schools, all in stock. When Texas and Oklahoma left for the SEC, the conventional wisdom was that the Big 12 was finished. Instead it backfilled with four ex-Pac-12 schools and stayed at 16.

One quirk worth knowing before you buy: Texas and Oklahoma now appear in SEC contexts and Big 12 contexts depending on the year of the garment. A Texas Longhorns jersey is a Texas Longhorns jersey either way — the school name is what is on the chest. But if you are shopping a jersey to match one bought before 2024, the colour and the cut may differ.

Deepest: Colorado Buffaloes, Arizona Wildcats, Kansas Jayhawks, Iowa State Cyclones.

07The Group of Five: six leagues, 69 schools, 718 jerseys

"Group of Five" is the collective name for the six FBS conferences outside the power four. It is a media-rights term, not a quality judgement — these leagues have produced New Year's Six bowl winners and Heisman candidates. What they do not have is the television money, and that is precisely why their jerseys are rarer and cheaper to buy.

Two of these are worth calling out. The rebuilt Pac-12 kept the name after Oregon State and Washington State were the only two members left standing, then added six new schools — 232 jerseys across 8, our second-deepest Group of Five league. And the American carries 143 jerseys, with Tulane alone accounting for 40.

Power four versus the rest: 2,811 to 1,068, with another 1,026 for schools in no conference named here.

08The independents: Notre Dame and UConn

Only two FBS football programmes have no conference: Notre Dame Fighting Irish and UConn Huskies. Notre Dame's independence is deliberate and permanent — it has turned down conference membership repeatedly because its NBC deal pays more than any league share would.

For a jersey buyer, independence is a feature. Notre Dame has no conference rival to split the fanbase with, which is a large part of why it carries 89 jerseys in our catalogue — more than any single ACC school and second only to Tennessee overall.

Notre Dame football, but Big East everything else. The Fighting Irish play football as an independent while their other sports sit in the ACC. UConn does the same in reverse — independent in football, Big East in basketball. So both schools appear in two places on this page, and both are correct.

09Big East: the conference that plays basketball

The Big East does not sponsor football, which is why it never appears in football realignment tables and why its eleven schools are often missing from "NCAA conference" lists. It is one of the strongest basketball conferences in the country, and its tournament has been at Madison Square Garden every year since 1983.

217 jerseys across all 11 members — every one in stock. Deepest: Georgetown Hoyas, UConn Huskies, Providence Friars, Villanova Wildcats.

The buying pattern here is inverted: Big East jerseys peak in March, not November. If you are buying a Villanova or Georgetown jersey as a gift, the basketball calendar is the one to plan around, and basketball jerseys are cut differently from football ones — sleeved, shorter, and sized closer to a t-shirt.

10How to find your team's jersey

All 3,879 conference jerseys live on their school's own collection page, plus 1,026 more for the 279 schools that sit outside these twelve leagues. Three ways in:

  • Know the school. Go straight to collegefanjersey.com/collections/<school-mascot> — tennessee-volunteers, notre-dame-fighting-irish, texas-a-and-m-aggies. Every school page is named the same way.
  • Know the state, not the school. The full site map lists every school alphabetically, which is faster when you are not sure whether it is "Miami Hurricanes" or "Miami (Ohio) RedHawks".
  • Not sure yet? The gift guide breaks it down by the kind of fan instead — the alumnus, the kid, the bandwagon, the person who already owns three.

Frequently asked questions

How many NCAA conferences are there?

Twelve that matter for buying a jersey: eleven FBS football conferences plus the Big East, which sponsors basketball but not football. Below those sit the FCS conferences, Division II and III, and the junior college leagues — we carry jerseys for 279 schools outside the twelve named here.

What are the "Power Four" conferences?

The SEC, Big Ten, ACC and Big 12 — the four leagues with the largest television contracts and the most control over the College Football Playoff. They hold 67 of the 148 conference schools and 2,811 of the 3,879 conference jerseys in our catalogue.

Is Notre Dame in a conference?

Not for football. Notre Dame is one of only two FBS independents, alongside UConn. Its other sports compete in the ACC, and UConn's other sports compete in the Big East — so both schools appear twice in conference tables, and both are right.

Does the conference name appear on the jersey?

Almost never. A college jersey shows the school name or the team nickname, the number, and sometimes a conference patch on the sleeve or chest — but the conference is not part of the design in the way a professional league logo is. That is good news: a jersey bought before realignment is not "outdated" the way a relocated team's kit would be.

Which conference has the most jerseys on your site?

The SEC, with 1,047 across 16 schools. The Big Ten is second at 839 across 18, then the ACC at 487 and the Big 12 at 438.

My team moved conferences — should I buy a different jersey?

No. The jersey carries the school, not the league, so a Texas jersey from the Big 12 era and one from the SEC era are both simply Texas jerseys. What does change over a realignment is the uniform supplier and the cut, so if you are matching a jersey someone already owns, check the tag inside the one they have.

Do you carry jerseys for schools outside these conferences?

Yes — 279 of them, with 1,026 jerseys. That includes FCS programmes like Furman Paladins and William & Mary Tribe, mid-major basketball powers like Gonzaga Bulldogs, and historically Black colleges like Howard Bison and Florida A&M Rattlers.
