College Jersey Size Guide: What Size Jersey Should You Actually Buy?

Jersey sizing trips people up because a jersey is not a t-shirt. The same person who wears a medium tee often takes a small or a medium jersey — and the only number that actually decides it is a chest measurement. Here is the whole system, with the real size charts from our catalogue.

Quick answer

  • Measure around the fullest part of your chest, under the arms, tape level. That single number picks your size.
  • Adult sizes are printed with chest ranges — M = 37.5–41 in, L = 41–44 in — so you are matching a number to a number.
  • Wear it over a hoodie? Add about 2 in before you choose.
  • Kids' sizes are age-banded: youth XS–XL covers ages 6–15; toddler 2T–5T covers ages 1–5.
  • Between two sizes? Go up. Exchanges are free for 30 days anyway.

Matching jerseys work for the whole family — you just need the right size for each person, and one chest measurement gets all four of them right.

01The one measurement that matters

Forget letter sizes for a moment. Take a soft tape and measure around the fullest part of your chest, under your armpits, keeping the tape level all the way round. Breathe out normally — don't puff up and don't squeeze.

That number, in inches, is your size. Every jersey product page on our site prints the chest range next to each size option, so the decision is a lookup, not a guess:

Measure once, match to the printed range. If the measurement lands on a boundary, the layering rule below decides.

02Adult size chart (unisex & men's)

This is the chart used by our unisex replica jerseys — the default fit across the catalogue. Ranges are the garment's intended chest fit, in inches, exactly as printed on the product pages:

SizeChest (in)Typical wearer
XS31.5–35Slim frame, or a fitted look
S35–37.5The "medium t-shirt" crowd
M37.5–41The most common adult size
L41–44Broad chest or layering over a tee
XL44–48.5Layering over a hoodie
XXL48.5–53.5—
3XL53.5–58—
4XL58–63—
5XL63–68—

Two things worth noticing. First, the chart runs XS through 5XL — bigger sizes are not an afterthought, they are stocked variants. Second, the ranges are wide (a size spans about 3–4.5 in), which is why the layering rule and the "go up" rule matter more than decimal precision.

03Youth & toddler size chart

Kids' jerseys are banded by age, not by chest — which makes them the easiest gift in the catalogue to size correctly.

RangeSizeAge
YouthXS6–7
YouthS8–10
YouthM10–12
YouthL12–13
YouthXL13–15
Toddler2T1–2
Toddler3T2–3
Toddler4T3–4
Toddler5T4–5
Youth and toddler jersey sizes mapped to ages, from 2T to youth XL
Kids' sizes are age-banded: toddler 2T–5T (ages 1–5), then youth XS–XL (ages 6–15).
Gift tip: for a growing kid, buy the larger end of the band. A youth S worn slightly loose in year one still fits in year two; a snug one doesn't. More on choosing for other people: the gift guide.

04Women's cut

A smaller part of the catalogue uses a dedicated women's cut, sized on bust rather than chest and cut narrower through the shoulders:

SizeBust (in)
XS29.5–32.5
S32.5–35.5
M35.5–38
L38–41
XL41–44.5
XXL44.5–48.5
3XL53–57

The product page always tells you which chart applies — if the size option reads "bust" instead of "chest", you're looking at the women's cut. When a listing doesn't specify, it's the unisex chart.

05The layering rule

A jersey is cut to be worn over something on a cold Saturday. That's the whole source of "it fit in the dressing room and it doesn't fit outside".

  • Over a t-shirt: use your measured chest as-is.
  • Over a hoodie or sweatshirt: add about 2 in to your measurement, then pick the size whose range contains the new number.
  • Cold-climate fans: this is why the person next to you in the same t-shirt size is wearing two sizes apart, and both are right.

06Between two sizes

Three tie-breakers, in order:

  • Will it be layered? Go up.
  • Is it a gift for a kid? Go up — they grow into it.
  • Neither? Go up anyway. A relaxed jersey reads as intentional; a tight one reads as a mistake. And if it's genuinely wrong, exchanges are free within 30 days of delivery.

07Sizing FAQ

Do college jerseys run big or small?

They run true to the printed chest range, and that range is cut looser than a fitted t-shirt. Practically: most people take their usual size or one down from their t-shirt size. The chest measurement beats both rules of thumb — measure once and match the number.

What if I order the wrong size?

Email cfjservice@outlook.com with your order number within 30 days of delivery and one email starts a free exchange. That safety net is also why the "go up when unsure" rule costs nothing.

Is a youth XL the same as an adult small?

No — don't cross the ranges. Youth XL (ages 13–15) is cut for a teenager's proportions, which are narrower through the shoulders than an adult small. A slim adult should use the adult chart, starting at XS or S.

Do the jerseys shrink in the wash?

They're polyester, which holds its size far better than cotton. Wash cold, hang dry, and the chest range you bought is the chest range you keep. Skip the dryer and the print stays crisp too.

How do I size a jersey as a gift without measuring the person?

Use what they already own: check the tag on a t-shirt they wear comfortably, then consult the chart — most people's jersey size equals their t-shirt size or one step smaller. For kids, use age. The full gift logic is in our gift guide.
