College Jersey Gift Guide 2026: What to Buy for Every Kind of Fan

Gift GuideUpdated October 2026·9 min read·By College Fan Jersey (CFJ)

Buying a college jersey as a gift is easy when you know the team and hard when you don't. This guide covers both — what to buy for six types of fans, which schools we actually have in stock, what each budget buys you, and the dates that decide whether it arrives before Christmas.

Quick answer

  • Know their team? Get a replica football jersey in that school's primary color. $44.90–$64.90, free standard shipping over $49.99.
  • Don't know their team? Their home-state school is the safest guess, followed by whichever team they complain about most.
  • Size by chest, not by t-shirt size. Adult sizes are printed with chest ranges (M = 37.5–41 in). Add 2 in if it will be worn over a hoodie.
  • Kids: youth XS–XL covers ages 6–15; toddler 2T–5T covers ages 1–5.
  • Deadline: order by Nov 24 for Christmas delivery. Custom name & number adds 3–7 business days of production.

01Three questions that decide the whole gift

Almost every "wrong jersey" story comes from skipping one of these. Answer them in order and the rest of the catalogue narrows itself.

Three questions for choosing a college jersey gift: the school, the fit, the size
Three questions, in order: which school, which fit, which size. Everything else — color, number, sport — is a preference, not a decision.

1. Which school?

This is the only question that can actually ruin the gift. If you're unsure, look for evidence rather than asking outright and spoiling the surprise: a mug in the kitchen, a decal on the car, the team they text about in November. Failing that, their home-state flagship school is right far more often than not.

2. Which fit?

Our catalogue is mostly unisex (about 4,600 styles) and youth (about 3,500), with a smaller women's range and a toddler range. Unisex is the default and the one to choose unless the recipient has specifically asked for a women's cut.

3. Which size?

Take one measurement — around the fullest part of the chest, under the arms, with the tape level. Every adult size on our product pages is printed with its chest range, so you are matching a number to a number, not guessing "medium" between two brands. Full charts: our size guide.

02What to buy for six kinds of fans

Different fans wear a jersey differently. Here is what actually lands with each.

The fanWhat to buyWhy it works
The die-hard alumReplica football jersey, home color, their college number or a retired legend'sThey already own team merch. What they don't own is a specific jersey — pick a year, a number or a colorway they're missing.
The casual / seasonal fanReplica jersey in the school's primary colorOne jersey they can wear three or four Saturdays a year. Don't overthink the player.
The kid (ages 6–15)Youth jersey, one size upYouth sizes are age-banded (XS 6–7 through XL 13–15). Sizing up buys a second season of wear.
The toddler (ages 1–5)Toddler jersey, 2T–5TThe photo opportunity is the gift. Toddler sizes run 2T (1–2) to 5T (4–5).
The parent or grandparentUnisex replica, size up for layeringOlder fans wear jerseys over a sweater. Add 2 in to the chest measurement for the layer underneath.
You genuinely don't know the teamA custom jersey with their surname, or a basketball/baseball jersey instead of footballIf you can't pick the school, don't guess wrong — pivot to the name, or to a sport where team loyalty is looser.
One rule that beats all six: when in doubt, choose the school over the player. A fan will forgive a jersey with the wrong number on the back. They will not forgive the wrong team on the front.

03The schools we actually have in stock

We carry 500+ schools across 8 sports, but depth is not evenly spread. These are the teams with the widest selection right now — useful if your recipient is flexible, or if you want a colorway beyond the standard home and away.

04What $60, $100, $150 and $240 buys

A single jersey runs $44.90–$64.90, with most styles around $61.99. That means the interesting decisions start at the second jersey, because the order crosses free shipping and then a discount tier.

Two youth jerseys is the sweet spot for a family gift: it clears $99 for 10% off and free shipping in one order.

Those tiers are Black Friday pricing and they apply automatically at checkout — no code to find, no coupon to forget. They run through Cyber Monday, Nov 30, 2026. Only the highest tier you qualify for is applied; tiers don't stack with each other. Full breakdown, including how to check whether a "was/now" price is real: Black Friday College Jersey Deals 2026.

The gift move: if you're buying for a household, one order of three jerseys beats three separate orders. You cross into 14–20% off, and everything arrives in one box on one date.

05Getting the size right in one measurement

The single most common gift mistake is buying a jersey in the recipient's t-shirt size. Jersey sizing is chest-based and cut looser than a tee, so the same person often takes a size down — unless they plan to layer.

  • Measure the chest — around the fullest part, under the arms, tape level. That's it.
  • Adult unisex: XS 31.5–35 · S 35–37.5 · M 37.5–41 · L 41–44 · XL 44–48.5 · XXL 48.5–53.5 · 3XL 53.5–58 · 4XL 58–63 · 5XL 63–68 (inches).
  • Youth (age): XS 6–7 · S 8–10 · M 10–12 · L 12–13 · XL 13–15.
  • Toddler: 2T (1–2) · 3T (2–3) · 4T (3–4) · 5T (4–5).
  • Layering over a hoodie? Add roughly 2 in to the chest measurement before you pick the row.
  • Between two sizes? Go up. A slightly loose jersey looks right; a tight one looks like a mistake.

Every product page lists the chest range next to each size, so you can match the number directly. The full charts, including the women's cut, live in our size guide.

06Is a custom name & number worth it?

Sometimes. A custom jersey adds 3–7 business days of production before shipping starts, and it is the only personalization that survives a wrong-team guess — because you're putting their name on the back, not a player's.

  • Worth it when the recipient is a kid who wants their own surname on the back, when you're buying for a family (matching jerseys, one surname), or when you don't know which player they like.
  • Skip it when you're close to the delivery deadline — the production window is real — or when the recipient is a traditionalist who wants a specific number.
  • Always check whether the shipping method you picked still gets it there in time once production is added.

08Gift FAQ

What if I get the size wrong?

Exchanges are free within 30 days of delivery. Email cfjservice@outlook.com with your order number and the size you need — one email starts the exchange. Because jersey sizes are chest-based, the fastest fix is to measure the recipient's chest and match it to the printed range on the product page.

Can I gift a jersey if I don't know which team they support?

Yes, but change what you're buying. Either choose a custom jersey with their own surname on the back, or pick a school tied to somewhere they've lived — home state, college town, or the team they argue about. Guessing a random school is the one mistake that can't be exchanged away in spirit.

Is a youth jersey or a toddler jersey the right choice for a 7-year-old?

Youth XS is sized for ages 6–7, so a 7-year-old sits at the very top of the toddler range and the very bottom of youth. Buy youth XS and expect a little room — at that age, room is a feature, not a problem.

Do Black Friday discounts apply to gift orders?

Yes, and nothing needs to be entered. The tier is applied to your cart the moment the subtotal crosses $69, $99, $149 or $239. See the full mechanics in our Black Friday deals guide.

How much does shipping cost on a gift order?

Standard shipping is $5.00 (7–15 days) and free once the order passes $49.99 — which a single jersey already does. Express is $15.99 (5–7 days) if you're ordering closer to Christmas.

Will a custom jersey still arrive before Christmas?

Yes if you order early enough. Custom name & number adds 3–7 business days of production before shipping begins, so roll the Nov 24 deadline back by about a week when you add personalization.
